30.09.2020 in Kraków, Rakowicka 22E, there was the celebration of the opening of the National Archives new building. The most modern archives building in Poland where acts dated to 12th century up to contemporary will be held, including crown documents, county acts, private collections items, huge cartographic collections, photography and icons.
The opening of the new building was performed on “Archivists Day” meaning the day of Saint Jerome – patron of librarians and archivists. In the ceremony took part representatives of government and local authorities, academic authorities and cultural institutions. During the opening celebration the congratulatory letter of President Andrzej Duda and vice prime minister – minister of Culture and National Heritage prof. Piotr Gliński were read.
New building of National Archives in Kraków is located on Rakowicka 22E street in Kraków. It consists of two segments: warehouse and office. Total usable area is ca. 14.000 m2. 70.000 meters of acts can be accommodated in 8 storeys in the archives warehouse. The office part consists of 6 floors of offices, modern conservation and digitization labs, book bindery, multi module reading room and audio visual hall for 180 people, three server rooms including spare server for Digital National Archives serving for ZOSIA system as the place to keep digital reproduction of archive data from whole Poland.
Nowadays, thanks to new modern building, the data kept in 5 branches of Archives in Kraków and also in Spytkowice near Zator, can be safely kept in proper conditions and stable temperature and humidity. The spare space in the building will be kept for archives coming in next several dozen years.
The building is environment friendly with many modern solutions such as: advanced air conditioning system, fire protection system, ventilation. Photovoltaic panels were installed on the roof. All systems are managed by the building management system (BMS).
Two old buildings at the area were restored – residues of old fortress of Kraków – now used as transformer station and outbuilding.
Civil works were performed by Skanska SA under investor supervision of ECM Group Polska S.A.
Financing of the investment (value of ca. 123 million PLN) comes from Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
